Turley Wine Cellars

The world’s premiere zinfandel specialist put these allocated wines on center stage.

Napa Valley based Turley Wine Cellars joined the Paso Robles wine scene in 2000 with the purchase of the 80-year-old Pesenti Vineyard. The Pesenti wines in those days could be described charitably as rustic, but Larry Turley recognized the potential of the old vineyard. The winery’s Pesenti Vineyard Zinfandel is made in the typically huge Turley style.

Sea Smoke, with a focus on Pinot Noir, was established in 1999 in Sta. Rita Hills. The Pinots have the dark color and concentration typical of the area, and they quickly attained cult status. Harlan

Bill Harlan is the proud owner of this 240 acre estate and 40 acre vineyard in the western Mayacamas hillsides of Oakville. Wine-maker Bob Levy, with oversight from consultant Michel Rolland, makes only 18,000 bottles per year of the extraordinarily complex and seamless Estate Cabernet and a second wine called The Maiden. Harlan Estate is one of Napas’ highly desirable cult Cabernets with a long waiting list of would-be-buyers, and collectors often willing to pay two to three times the release price for each new vintage.

Greg Gorman is a sophisticated and urbane fine-art photographer. His love of wine came about in a rather interesting fashion. He was called upon to shoot a project for Dave Phinney of Orin Swift fame. Being a huge fan of Mercury head, one of their extraordinary wines, he then was hooked. One year later he approached Dave for comments and feedback in regards to sourcing some of the finest grapes for his very own wine.  The 2006  was his very first blend. His extraordinary wines are sold exclusively here at The Wine Merchant and the following restaurants: Spago of Beverly Hills, Ago in Los Angeles, The Porch and The Dock in Newport Beach.

Christian Moueix acquired the site from the original Inglenook property and named it Dominus – Latin for master. Located in the southern part of Napa Valley, Dominus produces only two wines: the eponymous Dominus and its more affordable sibling, Napanook, both Cabernet Sauvignon-driven Bordeaux-style blends. Whether Moueix is the master of Dominus or vice versa doesn’t matter, great wine is being made.

Joseph Phelps Insignia

In 1973 Joseph Phelps bought the 600-acre Connolly cattle ranch in Spring Valley, and began planting vineyards. The winery was completed in 1974 and that same year the first Syrah was made, the first grapes were crushed at the new facility and the first Insignia was produced. Nearly four decades later, the flagship wine, Insignia, is recognized as one of the world’s great wines. Twenty nine of the 34 vintages have been rated ninety or more points by various wine publications.

Opus One Cabernet Sauvignon

A musical term meaning “The work of a composer”. The addition of the word One meaning “First work” for Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The label inspired by the Roman god Janus who represents the past and the future. The final design had Mondavi’s profile looking West to the U.S. and Rothschild ‘s East to France.

Cade Cabernet Sauvignon

Cade, a PlumpJack winery offshoot, looks to be a Howell Mountain producer of some promise. To date, there is a small-production, ripe blackberry-flavored Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon blended from sources such as Kalon, Dr. Crane and other premium vineyards. An Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a new wine recently on the market.

Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignons are not overly ripe, have serious structure, and age well. The Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon and Signature Cabernet Sauvignon are better than ever and deliver good value. The Mountain Cuvee Bordeaux-style blend and dry Chenin Blanc are also very drinkable wines.

Continuum is the latest venture of Tim, Marcia and the late Robert Mondavi in the form of a single Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend.  In 2008, the Mondavis purchased a new estate on Pritchard Hill. Off to a good start, Continuum is still a work in progress.

Quintessa is the home estate of Agustin Huneeus, one of the greatest wine businessmen of the last century, and his wife, Valeria.  The beautiful 280 acre estate surrounds a lake on rolling hills in the center of the valley. It is planted solely to Bordeaux varieties.

DuMOL

DuMOL founders Kerry Murphy and Michael Verlander have carefully crafted a jewel of a winery. Winemaker Andy Smith crafts extremely well balanced, ageworthy wines which, at their best, are electrifying.  The wines are given simple Irish surnames in keeping with Murphy’s heritage. While known for its Burgundian varietals, the winery also produces one or two Syrahs and a Viognier.

Hanzell Vineyards

Hanzell is held in great reverence among true California Pinot Noir connoisseurs, for its heritage, the quality of the wines, and the great lengths and expense that are sometimes required to acquire a bottle or two. The estate vineyard, planted in 1953, is the oldest Pinot Noir vineyard in North America.  The winery produces a range of Chardonnays as well, including the Sebella label. All wines age beautifully over several decades and are highly recommended.

Paul Hobbs

For true fans of Sonoma County wine, Paul Hobbs rarely needs an introduction. One of the most accomplished and sought-after winemakers in California. Hobbs made a name for himself as cheif enologist at Napa’s Opus One winery, and consulted at many top wineries before starting his own winery in 1991. Hobbs is a master in both Burgundian and Bordeaux varietals, resulting in an impressive portfolio of Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignons, and Syrahs, all of which are exceptional.

Pride Mountain Merlot

Situated precisely on the border of Sonoma and Napa counties, they are forced to have two seperate facilities, one on either side of the county line. Pride’s wines are sometimes labelled with Sonoma County and sometimes Napa, and sometimes both. Today, the winemaking team is led by Sally Johnson, who produces a nice line-up of wines including the well regarded Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, The Viognier and Sangiovese both come solely from Sonoma.

Ramey Wine Cellars is the eponymous effort of David Ramey, a highly successful winemaker for many top California wineries. Seghesio Family Vineyards

Started by the young Italian immigrant Edoardo Seghesio in 1895. Seghesio brand grew to produce more than 1.5 million bottles in the early 1990s but, in 1993 Ted and Peter Seghesio boldly decided to cut production to what they could produce from their own 100-year-old family vineyard. Apart from the old-vine Zinfandel grown there, the winery also produces a white wine from Arneis.

J. Rochioli Vineyards

Jonata Wines

Pisoni Vineyards

In 1982, Gary Pisoni planted 5 acres of Pinot Noir on a cattle ranch owned by his family, the vineyard has since grown to 45 acres, mostly Pinot. Grapes are sold to other top Pinot producers, but the family also makes a  voluptuous Pinot of its own under the Pisoni label. The Pisonis are partners in Garys’ Vineyard. Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, and rose are made under Lucia label.
