    Michel Niellon 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroie

Michel Niellon, who is now operating from ultra-modern new digs just outside the village, describes the 2010 vintage as one that "provided us with slightly lower yields, which is to say down 10 to 15% though the decline in pinot noir was much worse. We began picking on the 16th of September as we were afraid that the fruit would turn after the big thunder storm on the 12th. And indeed I began to see signs of it in our grands crus shortly thereafter so I am very, very glad that we started early. Potential alcohols were good at between 12.5 and 13% and the fruit was really quite clean. I like the vintage though not necessarily more than 2009." Niellon told me that one of the steps that he decided to take against premature oxidation was to increase the diameter of the corks he is using from 24 to 25 mm to provide for a tighter seal against oxygen ingress. The 2010s, as is typical chez Niellon, were bottled in August and October, 2011.

Michel Niellon 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers

    90RP

The 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers impresses for its pointed, vibrant minerality and overall focus. Crushed rocks, flowers, chamomile and white stone fruits are nicely layered. In 2010, the Vergers is classy and polished, yet also a bit subdued in its personality.

Michel Niellon 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chaumees

    91RP

Niellon’s 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chaumees wraps around the palate with nectarines, flowers, spices and mint. It shows the richness and viscosity of the vintage, but with brighter, more floral shades of fruit that avoid heaviness. Like all the Niellon wines in 2010, the Chaumees is medium in body, but it nevertheless possesses fine intensity and balance. A hint of sweet spices lingers on the finish.

Michel Niellon 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Champs Gain

The 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Champ Gains fleshes out nicely in the glass. Hints of spices and crushed rocks add nuance on the finish. Overall, this is a fairly subdued style of Champ Gains, a vineyard that often yields exuberant Chassagnes.
