Patrimony Estate by DAOU Vineyards
100 % Cabernet Franc
Words From the Wine Maker
As a child, my father’s favorite wine to drink was Cheval Blanc. I have always been impressed by the Cabernet Franc variety especially when done right. As a child growing up in the south of France, I would always partake of a little wine with my father. As such I have an emotional connection to this variety
The terroir on DAOU mountain is one of the most unique terroir in the world for growing Bordeaux varieties. The soils are similar to Bordeaux, with a climate that is similar to Oakville, in Napa. This combination gives to a unique place we call a rare phenomenon. On the upper hills we plant Cabernet franc on very rocky soils. This provides great minerality and layers of complexity to the wine while allowing it to reach Phenolics that are amongst the highest in the world. Achieving ripeness on Cabernet Franc is always a little bit of a challenge but not so on our mountain. As such you get the wonderful spice and character of Cabernet Franc while avoiding the bell pepper flavors. This is sure to change your perspective on how Cabernet Franc can taste.
PATRIMONY’s first-ever Cabernet Franc release is nothing short of quintessential—full bodied yet supremely elegant and layered. A fresh-cut floral bouquet immediately enchants the nose. Scents of violets, hibiscus, exotic flowers and cigar box intermingle with aromas of blackcurrants, cooked blackberries and grilled meats. The palate is silky and expansive, unfolding with a minerally backbone and velvety tannins. The experience is completely seamless with a great attack, a strong mid-palate and an impossibly long finish. Displaying rare phenolic character, this wine shows what is possible from Cabernet Franc grown on DAOU Mountain. While approachable upon release, it will develop beautifully for decades to come.
